Question of teh day

Question of the day !
A plant that receives the nutrition it needs will continue to live. But what if we took all its oxygen away ?Do you think the plant can still grow ?Why ?

Ans :
No !The plant would not grow ,It is true that a plant need to take in carbon dioxide in order to survive and that it expels oxygen as the waste product of photosynthesis. But a plant doesnt only stores the food it produces-it uses some to feed itself. When a plant feeds on its own food ,The food is broken down in the same way that its broken down in an animal's body ,including yours, with oxygen .The oxygen needed to break down the carbohydrate molecules and release the energy stored in those molecules. While a plant is photosynthesising its producing more than enough oxygen to break down its own food. But if you were to take away the oxygen surrounding the plant ,The plant would in effect die.

  1. own theory: We Think that plants are still able to survive and miss wang didnt specify whether if there is sunlight. If there is no sunlight, we agreed that the plants would not be able to grow. If there is sunlight, the plants would be able to grow as they are able to photosynthesize and receive carbon dioxide and produces oxygen and continue to photosynthesize and respire. But this is just our own theory.

  2. I agree with both 0106163236 ^-^. and 2e1 science TLLM as the question did no state whether if there is light. However, does the water vapour make a difference in photosynthesis? If the plant was being kept in a transparent box, and water vapour is continously kept in the box, the photosynthesis of the plant will be affected.

  3. ariel: i think that even without sunlight, oxygen is still important in the life processes, like what X-istence wrote.. can go take a look...

  4. ariel: i thought there's another type of respiration that does not require oxygen? called anaerobic respiration. doesn't it break down food to release energy too? so sry my opinion doesnt seem to be the same every blog, coz the qns i have in my mind is different...

  5. for all i know, Ariel and shiying are right, firstly as i had said previously, miss wang didnt state whether there is light anot, secondly like what arial said, even if there isnt light, they are still able to respire as there is another type of respiration that does require oxygen. further more, they could also photosynthesis to get the gases they need. This process is also known as the dark stage.

  6. further explaination: dark stage occurs if the substrates are present. [o.o or is it anaerobic respiration?]
please correct me if im wrong.!!

    agree with Ariel:
"ariel: i think that even without sunlight, oxygen is still important in the life processes, like what X-istence wrote.. can go take a look... "
oxygen is needed MANY, MANY, MANY uses.
i searched using uncle google. ONE OF THE WEBSITE:
you can find out more too...

  7. Add on > Oxygen is needed for the plant to carry out respiration. Glucose is used by the cells during respiration to provide energy for cellular activities. This only occurs when there is oxygen. So, if oxygen is taken away, its cells are unable to produce energy to the cells cannot produce energy for its acitvities and .. they DIE.

  8. can someone give a better explanation ? im getting confused.

  9. A better explanation:
Without oxygen the plant survive with light dependant reaction with itself by photosynthesizing and making of glucose. As oxygen is the 2nd product, the plant would use the glucose and respire aerobically.Amount of carbon dioxide in the box will give some amount of oxygen and after respiring it give out oxygen. It will be a continuous process. Hence,The answer to the question is Yes plant can survive somewhat but its growth might not be at its optimum and it might die if it is in an enclosed box without water.I agree with scienceinquest and shiying

  12. oxygen is a waste product of photosynthesis. A plant consumes oxygen during the night. But there is a lot of oxygen produced in the day so the plant can consume it's own oxygen waste and leave plenty for other organisms to breath! So, in the absence of Oxygen, the plant will supply plenty oxygen on its own (include the raw materials that is needed for photosynthesis and sunlight). I agree with scienceinquest, shi ying and Wilber. F.Y.I Light is not a raw material but an essential condition for photosynthesis to take place.
